RE:SET Fanchant Sheet

Every call and response for the Desired State tour.

Learn these before the show. There is no lyric sheet at the venue

First

Before you go

RE:SET is four members. RE:SET has always had four members. RE:SET will have four members at the end of the show regardless of what happens during it, and the fandom's entire culture is built on taking that absolutely seriously.

The fandom is called the Replicas. The lightstick is the Helmlight, a holographic seven-spoked wheel. The official chant, which goes over the opening bars of the title track before anybody sings, is the one every other chant on this sheet is built around:

R-E-S-E-T, RE:SET! DESIRED STATE, THAT'S YOU AND ME!

If you have come from the Kubernetes side rather than the K-pop side: every chant below is a real fanchant in form, and also an accurate description of what a control plane does. Read it straight down and you get the reconciliation loop without anybody explaining it. That is the bit.

The members

The members

kube-apiserver · Leader, Center

API The face. Every request goes through her, and nothing reaches the group except by her. Answers in interviews on behalf of members who are standing right there.

etcd · Main Vocal

ETCEE The memory. She keeps every promise ever made, which makes her the source of truth and, on track six, the ballad voice. The others are free to forget because she does not.

kube-scheduler · Main Dancer

SKED The choreographer. She places every member in formation before the music starts. Bin-packing, but make it fashion.

kube-controller-manager · Rapper

CTRL The fixer. She watches for drift and pulls everyone back to the desired state, mid-verse if she has to. Track seven is hers.

The chants

The eight tracks

Track 1

Desired State

The title track, 128 bpm. The Fan Chant of the Replicas goes over the opening bars, before anybody sings.

R-E-S-E-T, RE:SET! DESIRED STATE, THAT'S YOU AND ME! GROUP: This is the desired state REPLICAS: (STATE!) GROUP: Come back, we regenerate REPLICAS: (-ATE!) REPLICAS: RECONCILE! GROUP: We don't terminate REPLICAS: RECONCILE! GROUP: We just replicate

The (state) and (-ate) echoes are ours, not theirs. They are printed in the booklet as part of the lyric because the group considers the fandom part of the arrangement rather than an audience for it.

Track 2

CI/CD (Ship It Pretty)

140 bpm and the fastest chant on the sheet. It is meant to be slightly too fast to say comfortably.

GREEN LIGHTS ALL THE WAY DOWN! GROUP: Test me, bless me REPLICAS: SHIP ME NOW! ALL: CI-CD, CI-CD REPLICAS: (PRETTY!) ALL: STRAIGHT TO PROD, NO PITY!

There is no chant on the bridge. Fans who fill it are asked, in the tour programme, to consider what shipping straight to prod with no pity actually involves.

Track 3

In Your Namespace

The flirt, 105 bpm. Quiet chant, close to a whisper, and it is the only one on the sheet that is not shouted.

GROUP: Nobody sees us in here REPLICAS: (scoped to you, crystal clear) GROUP: Label me yours, selector on REPLICAS: IN YOUR NAMESPACE ALL NIGHT LONG!
Track 4

Rolling Update (Zero Downtime)

The comeback itself, 124 bpm. Members leave the formation and rejoin one at a time and the line is never empty. The chant does the same thing.

ONE GOES ONE COMES NEVER ZERO ONE GOES ONE COMES NEVER ZERO GROUP: Changing right in front of you REPLICAS: NEVER GOING DARK! GROUP: Never out of view REPLICAS: ZERO DOWNTIME IN YOUR EYES!

Do not chant a member's name during this track. The entire point of the choreography is that it does not matter which one is in the front position, and naming her undoes it.

Track 5

Sticky Session

The slow jam, 92 bpm. Helmlights held still rather than waved.

GROUP: The balancer keeps choosing you REPLICAS: (out of every backend) GROUP: It's you it routes me to GROUP: Call it affinity REPLICAS: CALL IT FATE!

Purists hold that a sticky session is a failure of design and refuse this chant on principle. They are correct, and they are no fun at a concert.

Track 6

My Heart Remembers Everything

ETCEE's solo. Piano, 72 bpm. There is no chant on this track.

(no chant) At the final line, Helmlights down. Not off. Down. GROUP: Quorum of one when you're gone REPLICAS: (silence)

The silence is the loudest thing in the show and the fandom polices it harder than any of the shouted parts. She is the one who remembers so the others are free to forget. Let her.

Track 7

ROLLBACK (Don't Call Me, Revert Me)

The breakup track, 118 bpm. CTRL's showcase. Full volume, and the response comes in a beat early on purpose.

REPLICAS: DON'T CALL ME! GROUP: Revert me REPLICAS: DON'T CALL ME! GROUP: Revert me GROUP: Known-good heart REPLICAS: TAG IT TRUE! ALL: ROLLING BACK TO THE ME BEFORE YOU!
Track 8

Lightstick (Five Nines Forever)

The fan anthem, 100 bpm, featuring vK. Helmlights up for the whole track and the arena sings the hook without being asked.

ALL: HOLD YOUR HELM UP TO THE SKY! ALL: FIVE NINES FOREVER, WE DON'T DIE! GROUP: Every light a little flame REPLICAS: THE WHOLE ARENA CHANTS THE NAME! (final chorus, lights held, nobody points at the stage)

Five nines is 99.999%, which is about five minutes of downtime a year, and the fandom has never once let that be pointed out at a show without booing. On the last chorus nobody points their Helmlight at the stage. The liner notes settle it: lift your light, but not to us. Lift it with us.

Etiquette

Fandom etiquette

On the concept, for anyone still confused: a ReplicaSet is a Kubernetes object whose entire job is to keep a stated number of identical Pods running. If one dies it makes another. It does not mourn the one that died and it does not know it was ever different. RE:SET is that, with choreography, and the four members are named for the four pieces of a control plane.

Hear Desired State

RE:SET forever.
Three members, always three.

The Loop is turning. It turneth still. HA-llelujah.
